About Barry

Welcome to Barry's Driver Training. I have been an Approved Driving Instructor since November 2002. I also have a royal naval and police service background. I joined the Royal Navy in 1967 (Communications Department) and was lucky enough to travel the world widely learning about people and their traditions and cultures and to some degree about myself also. I retired in 1978 after which I joined the Hampshire Constabulary in February 1979. I served in Portsmouth for ten years during which time I gained my advanced driving qualifications to Class One level. I spent the following fourteen years in the traffic department where I learned many skills including providing road safety presentations to members of the public on how to improve their driving skills and knowledge.

I was invited to become an examiner for RoSPA (The Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents) in 1994 and in preparation for my retirement from the Police Service I took a Diploma in Advanced Driving Instruction which I extended recently to a BTech in Advanced Driving Instruction.  Since retiring I have completed a BA (Hons) Degree in Driver Education after which I then prepared for my MA (also in Driver Education), which I completed in 2011.

I enjoy all aspects of educating learner and professional drivers in my capacity as a DSA Approved Driving Instructor and Fleet Trainer.

I have been married to my wife Christina for 37 years and have two grown up daughters (Kerry & Laura) of whom I am very proud as both have gone out into the world with excellent educational skills and gained good employment positions.

Recently (18th May 2016) I retired as the chair of the DIDU Association (a national driving instructor body) where I have been involved with all things driver education; working hard to promote safer driving and to raise the profile of the driver training profession. I was regularly involved with issues relating to driver and road safety and communicating with the appropriate government agencies.

I live and work from my home in Portchester, Hampshire.
